Waiheke's Wild Life
You could be surprised on what you can see around the waters of Waiheke.
Waiheke's Bird life is excellent. A gannet colony and an Island of petrel migration is a highlight on outer Islands. A number of sea birds visit various times of the year. Blue Penguin are common along the coast with Heron, Black Shags, Oystercatchers, Wrybills,Dotterels, these are just some of the many sea birds found around Waiheke. Bird watchers won't be dissapointed.
Rays are common and can grow up to 2 metres in width. We have run over rays with the wingtips splashing each side of the kayak. Dolphins are sighted all year round bottlenose and the common dophin are plentiful in the Hauraki Gulf. Orca swim along Waihekes coast normally in winter months, looking for rays to eat. (like biscuts for them) Minkie and Bryde whales are also found just north of Waiheke Island in the outer islands called The Noises. These days even sea snakes / small turtles have been found washed up at Onetangi Beach, obviously way off their pacific area's normally 500 miles north of us here at Waiheke island.
